Fire-Resistant Landscaping

During a wildfire everything on your property – landscaping, cars, and the home itself – has the potential to become fuel for the fire. Fire-resistant landscaping is one step property owners can take to decrease these hazards.

Quick Facts: Colorado’s population is growing, its urban areas are rapidly expanding, and people are building more homes in what was once natural forest and brushland. Newcomers to rural areas need to know how to correctly landscape their property to reduce wildfire hazards.

Non-Combustible Landscape Zone

The first 5 feet outward from a foundation wall or deck is one of the most critical parts of your landscaping for home survivability:
  • Keep this area free of flammable materials and vegetation.
  • Use walkways, stone or concrete patios, and landscape stone laid over weed barrier.
  • Well irrigated and maintained grass can be used but is less desirable.
